Red sorrel is native to Finnish sands and rocks, in addition to which it has spread to dry fields, wastelands and roadsides. The red sorrel is often called suolaheinä in Finnish, literally meaning ‘salt hay’ because of its salty taste. The plant can be used like spinach, but the oxalic acid it contains may be harmful to some in large quantities. It tastes the best in early summer.
