The salt-tolerant, blue-grey sand ryegrass (Leymus arenarius) is one of the most impressively-sized plants found on sandy beaches. Its survival in such a sandy habitat is aided by the plant’s strong underground parts and the sharp leaves, which can cause painful cuts to swimmers who stray too close.
You can find a lone stand of sand ryegrass at the public beach on Läntinen Pihlajasaari island, but there are also more extensive stands growing in Lauttasaari island and in Kallahdenniemi.
