The demanding mezereon (Daphne mezereum) grows in herb-rich forests with calcareous soil. The small, vertical-stemmed shrub is easy to distinguish in the spring by its beautiful flowers and in the autumn by its red berries.
The berries are highly poisonous. Mezereon has traditionally been used to poison predators and as a medicinal plant.
