The common chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collubita) is indigenous to lush, mixed forests and favours the shade of spruce copses. Its song is like falling raindrops: chiff-chaff-chiff-chaff-chiff-chaff.
The species’ current Finnish name, tiltaltti, as well its old Finnish name, tynnyrilintu (lit. ‘barrel bird’), are both rooted in the highly distinctive song, as are its German name, Zilpzalp, and the English name, chiffchaff.
