The beautiful-flowered and red-berried guelder-rose (Viburnum opulus) grows in herb-rich forests and by the sides of streams. The shedding bark of guelder-rose shoots has a foul smell, but contrary to popular belief, the plant is not poisonous. The guelder-rose and especially its cultivar Viburnum opulus ‘Roseum’ are popular ornamental plants. The guelder-rose is also a medicinal plant.
